Terms of service

By downloading, installing, or using Chaos Studies ("the App"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use the App.

Chaos Studies is an application for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Playdate that draws interactive visualizations of strange attractors. The App provides:

• Real-time 3D visualization of nine strange attractors
• Interactive controls: touch, mouse or trackpad, the Playdate crank, and tilt
• A spatial soundtrack and a synth that follows the drawing (iPhone, iPad and Mac), and music presets on Playdate
• Light and dark display modes
• A tilt parallax effect on iPhone, iPad and Playdate

The App requires:

• iPhone: iOS 17.6 or later
• iPad: iPadOS 17.6 or later
• Mac: macOS 14.0 (Sonoma) or later
• Playdate: a Playdate handheld with current firmware

The App collects no personal data:

• No personal data is transmitted to external servers
• Accelerometer data is used only for the real-time parallax effect
• All settings are stored locally on your device

The App asks for no system permissions. On iPhone and iPad it reads the accelerometer for the tilt parallax effect, which does not require a permission prompt. You can turn Parallax off in the App's settings, and the App works the same without it.

The App, including its design, code, visualizations, and audio, is the intellectual property of Field Bureau & Werkstatt LLC. The mathematical equations for strange attractors are in the public domain; our specific implementation and presentation are protected.

You may not copy, modify, distribute, or create derivative works based on the App without explicit written permission.

The App is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind. We are not liable for any damages arising from the use of the App, including but not limited to:

• Device compatibility issues
• Visual or audio playback issues
• Battery consumption
• Data loss or corruption

The App displays animated visual content. If you are sensitive to flashing lights or motion, please use the App with caution. We recommend taking breaks during extended use.

Users are responsible for:

• Ensuring device compatibility
• Using the App in accordance with these Terms
• Keeping audio volume at safe levels

The App is sold through Apple's App Store for iPhone, iPad and Mac, and through Panic's Playdate Catalog for Playdate. Purchases, refunds, and your license to use the App are also subject to the terms of the store you bought it from.

We may update the App and these Terms from time to time. Continued use of the App after updates constitutes acceptance of any changes. Updates are distributed through the App Store and the Playdate Catalog.

You may stop using the App at any time by uninstalling it from your device. These Terms will remain in effect until terminated by either party.
